Fort Ann officials: Cut the tobacco ads
|
Published on Sunday, May 27, 2007
THE POST-STAR,
FORT ANN -- The Fort Ann Village Board has a message for local store owners -- tobacco advertisements are no longer welcome in the area.
On May 1, the Village Board of Trustees passed a nonbinding resolution titled "A Commitment to Public Health." The resolution requests all Fort Ann stores to voluntarily remove all exterior tobacco advertisements and any interior advertisements that are placed at a child's eye level or near candy or toys.
The resolution was presented to the Village Board by youth from Washington County Reality Check, a youth-based anti-tobacco advocacy group, and the Southern Adirondack Tobacco Free Coalition, of which Reality Check is a member.
Both organizations are funded by the New York state Department of Health Tobacco Control Program and work to prevent youth from initiating tobacco use.
More information about the effects of tobacco advertising on youth can be found at, www.TobaccoFreeAdirondacks.org |
